There are three mechanisms available to initiate communications with a device:

  1. Open or bring into focus a hardware interface file for the device and choose the Communications option in the top menu bar (see Figure 12.1),
  2. In the workspace file view, right click on a hardware interface for the device and choose Communications from the pop-up menu.
  3. With no files open, choose the Communications option in the top menu bar. This option is not associated with a particular device and all selections which require a hardware interface file will be grayed out. For example, query hardware info will work, but program hardware will not be available.
